India's New Manufacturing Economy
Worth a read article in the NY Times about the new manufacturing economy in India. A lot of my co-workers are from India and they are all exemplary individuals- well educated, articulate and versed in public discourse; their perspectives on the vast cultural, physical and technological shifts that are transforming- or not, in some places-- their country make for compelling lunchtime conversations. Imagine the last 200 years of "progress" the US has been through occurring in a <= 20 year timeframe and you can begin to visualize the imp/explosive changes overtaking that continent.

... everytime I post an entry on my blog, I head over to yours, and see you've just posted too!
Spooky.
re India ... the speed of the changes there is, I believe, what has made the fiction coming out of India the most fascinating in recent years; or, it's one of several factors ... But the tension between the past and zooming-toward-you future is the main subject of much Indian fiction, most notable, perhaps, Jhumpa Lahiri's collection of stories, The Interpreter of Maladies, which I highly recommend to anyone. And, of course, there's the work of favorite, Rohinton Mistry, and many, many others, including the incredibly charming and affecting little sort-of allegory, The Snake Charmer (by, I think, Vijay Singh).
A similar body of work is starting to come out China--read Yiyun Li's beautiful collection A Thousand Years of Good Prayers.
Off to the marina to check on the boats, especially to bail out my namesake, the broken-down little Lulu. Hope to get some good pix of stormy waters! Check my blog later today ...
